One of my pet peeves when reading an audit report is to see words like “some”, “many”, “a few”, “most”, or even “one of the.” They never really give me the comfort of knowing the auditor is right. Granted there are many times when even one failure is a big deal, but that still shouldn’t justify not letting the reader know what we’re dealing with.
Data, done right, can lead to great opportunities. Data can help us find problems. It can be a great tool in defining the problem. And it is critical in describing problems. That’s some pretty powerful stuff, which is why the auditor must ensure they are using it the right way.
Is your audit shop using data the right way?
